Nissan recalls over 14,000 top-end vehicles in UAE

More than 14,000 Nissan's top-end vehicles will be recalled in the UAE for safety checks of possible brake pedal pin defects and faulty fuel gauges, Nissan Middle East.

It is estimated that 14,010 vehicles could have problems with the fuel gauge and 8,126 with the brake pedal, a spokesperson at the Nissan Motor Company’s regional headquarters said.

Nissan did not say the total number of vehicles recalled: some of the vehicles may have both the problems.

Vehicles with faulty brake pedals include 2008, 2009 and 2010 models of Nissan’s Titan, Armada and Infiniti QX56, and 2008 and 2009 model of Nissan Quest.

Those with fuel-gauge inaccuracy include models from 2005 to 2008 of Titan, Armada and Infiniti QX56, and some Nissan Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra vehicles produced between January and March 2006 and between October 2007 and January 2008.

“Nissan is committed to customer safety and quick, effective resolution of safety issues. We are not aware of any accidents or injuries stemming from any of these matters. Through these proactive steps we want to ensure that the drivers and passengers in our vehicles continue to be safe,” the spokesperson said.

Nissan Motor, Japan’s third-largest carmaker, said it would recall a total of 32,147 vehicles in the Middle East, part of nearly 540,000 vehicles voluntarily recalled worldwide due to similar issues.

“This is a voluntary campaign and it is not the result of any accident. We did not receive any accident or injury complains in the UAE,” Michel Ayat, CEO of Arabian Automobiles Company, sole distributor for Nissan in Dubai and Northern Emirates, told Khaleej Times.

“Our service department is checking the potential cars that could be impacted and we can fix it in less than one hour, if there is any fault,” Ayat said.

Nissan Middle East said it will notify customers with potentially affected vehicles and repairs will begin immediately. The inventory of replacement parts for the fuel gauge recalls is being stocked and will require some time to reach full volume, it said.

“We have put measures in place to support customer convenience while all vehicles are repaired. Nissan’s regional call centre has been briefed and is prepared to advise our customers,” the company said.

“We learned of three incidents of brake pins becoming partially disengaged beginning in December 2009. One was in the US and the other two were in the Middle East. None resulted in an accident or injury.

Vehicles with higher mileage levels may have fuel gauges that incorrectly indicate the amount of fuel in the tank. This ultimately could lead to the vehicle running out of fuel.
